What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a method of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of a variety of medical conditions and disorders. We look at the patient 'as a whole' and therefore treatment does not target symptoms but aims to establish and treat those parts of the body that have caused the problem. This holistic approach may include careful analysis of such details as the patient’s medical history, nutrition, lifestyle, personal circumstances, posture, gait and ergonomics.

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which uses a wide variety of techniques. Treatment modalities may include hands-on methods such as soft tissue massage, mobilisation and manipulative techniques, and advice on such topics as ergonomics and nutrition. In addition, specific exercises and stretches may be recommended to aid recovery and promote health. Osteopathic Treatment is tailored to the individual and will therefore vary between patients.

As Osteopaths, we believe that there is a strong relationship between structure and function of the body. If the structure is balanced, movement restored and functioning well, then 'health' will follow.

By law, all Osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) who regulate the practice of Osteopathy in the UK. For more information, please visit their website at osteopathy.org.uk. Osteopaths study for a minimum of four years for an undergraduate degree, with emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine.
