What will happen during my first visit?

During your first visit, a comprehensive case history will be taken, with details of both your current complaint and previous medical issues being recorded. Following this, a detailed examination will take place where you will first be asked to perform some simple movements. Your Osteopath will then perform a gentle hands-on assessment and simple medical tests such as blood pressure measurement.

With this information, your Osteopath will establish a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan which they will discuss with you and answer any questions that you may have.

If Osteopathic treatment is considered appropriate for you, then treatment will commence. Your Osteopath may use such hands-on methods as soft tissue massage, mobilisation and manipulative techniques, and advice on such topics as ergonomics and nutrition. In addition, specific exercises and stretches may be recommended to aid recovery and promote health.

If Osteopathy is not considered appropriate for you, or if further investigations are recommended prior to treatment (for example blood tests or an X-Ray), then we will refer you to the relevant health care professional (such as your GP).

During your examination and treatment, you will be asked to remove some of your clothing to enable your Osteopath to observe how the different areas of your body are functioning. Please tell your Osteopath if you are uncomfortable with this. If you would like a friend or relative to accompany you to your appointment to act as a chaperone, you are more than welcome to do so.
